London: c1770 Original watercolour on paper, under glass in near contemporary frame with gilt inlay (damaged), recently glazed, image size 145 x 215 mm; left-hand margin rather dusted. A lovely mellow view of the bridge seen from the Chelsea side looking towards Battersea, with fishing boats and eel catchers out on the river. The bridge was opened to pedestrians in November 1771 and by 1772 a chalk and gravel surface was added and the bridge opened to vehicular traffic. This might date the watercolour which shows only foot traffic on the bridge. The style of the painting is very much that of the pseudo-Japanese or Chinese decoration fashionable on porcelain of the period. Indeed at around that time Chelsea had the most important porcelain factory in England, run by Nicholas Sprimont, based in Lawrence Street, just off Cheyne Walk; it is therefore possible, to my mind, that porcelain painters applied this style in their spare time to a watercolour such as this.
