Crown 8vo (200 mm); lii, [blank], 200, (10) pp. With a copper engraved portrait frontispiece of Gardiner, dated 1704, a folding engraved plate of a formal knott garden, with 2 inch split along one folding crease, and four engraved plates, one for each of the four books (Flowers, Trees, Water and The Orchard), and engraved devices in the text. Plates engraved by Elisha Kirkall (1682?-1742) born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Contemp. calf boards with a rectangular panel in the middle with blocked flower heads and borders, spine re-laid, blackened, with raised bands dividing into six compartments, each with gilt floral motif, red calf label lettered in gilt. Old pencilled note reading “B. Rota 311” within a pencilled circle on front pastedown. Edges of the pages speckled pink. Light water stain at bottom right corner of the block running through entire book. Index and publisher’s catalogue in the rear. A clean and tight copy. Rapin was a French Jesuit writer born at Tours in 1621. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1639, taught rhetoric and wrote extensively in both verse and prose. Originally published as ‘Hortorum Libri IV’ in 1672, with another edition in 1706, translated by Gardiner (1679-1732), the son of the Bishop of Lincoln [Wing R269]
