Demy 8vo (230 mm); lxxx, 520; xiv, 625 pp. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard in each volume plus around 800 maps, diagrams, illustrations and photographs in the text including a large, fold out plan of the Arctic Regions by Professor Angelo Heilprin for the Royal Geographical Society of Philadelphia, dated 1897, slightly torn. Publisher’s original blue cloth with silvered panel of a pack of huskies and an Eskimo on the front of each volume, gilt lettering to spines and fronts; minor shelfwear to heads of spine; top edges gilt. All plates present. Includes indexes and several appendices including a census of the Smith Sound Eskimos dated August 31 1895. The UK First Edition which was bound up from the sheets of the American first edition of the same year. An about Fine copy.
The first part of this book details the reconnaissance of the Greenland inland ice, 1886, while the second is an account of the North-Greeland Expedition of 1891-92 including an expedition by boat into Inglefield Gulf.
