First Edition. Two parts in one, including the Supplement (1789) bound in at the back. Demy 4to (290 mm) [viii], 132, 10 pp. Engraved frontispiece and sixty plates in all (including the ten supplementary plates) plus a vignette on the titlepage, one other (captioned plate 50) on leaf facing “Description of the Plates” and several tailpieces. (The numbering of the plates skips plate 49 and that of the descriptions of the plates skips number 50. However, the illustration on p. 118 is numbered 50, but the description "Plate XLIX" refers to this illustration) The frontispiece is signed as engraved by N.C. Goodnight, and dated Aug 1786, the plates by J. Hamilton, and the titleplate vignette by J. Newton. Full contemporary calf, gilt spine with red morocco title label. Spine a touch rubbed, joint of front board tender towards to the top though holding well with all ties intact. Page edges dyed yellow. Prelims and first dozen or so pages foxed, titlepage slightly toned, titlepage to Supplement and following leaves heavily foxed. Notably, all the plates a remarkably sharp and free of any foxing whatsover, which is uncommon in copies of this book. With the bookplate of George Weare Braikenridge to front pastedown. Braikenridge (1775-1856) lived at Broomwell House, Brislington, Bristol, where he amassed a wealth of historical and topographical material on Bristol which became known as the Braikenridge Collection.
