Translated and illustrated by photogravures after paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti ... With the fifth canto of Dante's Inferno, and Rossetti's two illustrations thereto.

London : George Routledge & Sons | New York : E.P. Dutton & Co., [c.1910]

Original blue cloth with decorative gilt border and panel to front board; titlepage printed in red and black; 103 pages; eight photogravure plates after the original paintings by Rossetti, each with tissue-guard; boards very slightly rubbed. A Fine copy.

A most elegantly decorated copy of Dante’s 'La Vita Nuova' written in a prosimetrum style, combining both prose and verse. One cazone in this collection was left unfinished, after the death of Dante's livelong love, Beatrice Portinari. This collection of prose and verse are all written about Beatrice, and so could be viewed as somewhat autobiographical. This edition was translated by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite movement in England. He also wrote sonnets to accompany his paintings, including 'The Girlhood of Mary Virgin'. Rossetti used Beatrix Portinari as his inspiration for his painting 'Beata Beatrix'.
