Venice / Venezia : Ferdinando Ongania Editore, sold by B.T. Batsford, 52 High Holborn, London, 1893.

First Edition in English, preceded by the 1890-1892 Venice edition, of this spectacular portfolio (measuring 565 x 400 mm) of loose leaf photogravure plates of the finest views of Venice. With an introduction by Pompeo Molmenti and notes on the work by Ongania. With letterpress titlepage in black and red featuring an engraved vignette and an additional title page after a water colour by Alberto Prosdocimi, plus additional illustrations by him. Also with a four-page captioned list of plates, dated November 1892, titled in red and black with engraved ornamental initial. The 100 plates range in subject from the standard tourists views of the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco and the Palazzo Ducal to evocative scenes of daily life (fishing folk, poling gondoliers) played out in blind alleys and deserted side canals. Each plate has the original tissue-guard (toned in some cases) and their is occasional light spotting, mainly marginal. English titlepage printed in red and black together with a reproduction of the original titlepage from the original Italian edition, illustrated by Albeto Prosdocimi, with imprint date 1890-91. The plates are presented in an morocco-backed printed card folder with original ties, very slightly marked and rubbed. A Fine copy.

The Venetian publisher and bookseller Ferdinando Ongania used the latest photographic techniques to create facsimile editions and reproductions of great Venetian artworks. In particular, his heliographic prints were remarkable for their clarity. He published out of his antique shop and gallery on Piazza San Marco from where he sold photogravures to well-to-do tourists.
