Translated from the French by John Reinhold Forster

London : J. Nourse and T. Davies, 1772.

First English Edition. Demy 4to (275 mm); xxviii, 476 pp; one folding plate (depicting Tahitian canoes) and five large, folding maps (showing the route of the journey around the World, the Magellan Straits, two of the South Pacific, and the Moluccas); final two leaves of the Introduction (pp. xxv-xxviii) misbound at the rear; two small circular stamps of the Selbourne Library; bookplate of Sir Henry Mainwaring. Prelims heavily foxed and intermittent foxing throughout including one of the maps. Contemp. full calf, spine gilt tooled with decorative vases and floral motif, raised bands, gilt title lettering; marbled endpapers; calf rubbed and scuffed with signs old old repairs to corners and edges of spine.

Bougainville (1729-1811) was the first Frenchman to sail around the world, and he inadvertently carried with him the first woman to do the same. On their return to St Malo in 1769, they recorded the loss of just seven men from the 330 who had travelled out. Bougainville's account of this journey appeared in French in 1771, and he described Tahiti as an earthly paradise, which influenced the writings of Enlightenment scholars such as Rousseau and Diderot. The appendix contains a glossary of words in the Tahitian language. “On the 13th a great many periaguas, with outriggers, surrounded the ships. The Indians brought us fowls, eggs, bananas, perrokeets and cockatoes ... all the people are very tawny, of a short stature, and ugly”.
