Frontispiece in each volume (Captain Cook in v1, Sir Joseph Banks v2) 12 engraved plates, with the plate opp p320 in v1 inserted upside down. Text and plates browned with a good deal of staining to the prelims in v1. Calf backed with marbled boards and page edges. With the bookplate of Thomas Hodgkin (1831-1913) in each vol. Hodgkin was a banker and historian of Quaker heritage who became a partner in the banking house of Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease and Spence, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, which eventually became amalgamated with Lloyds Bank.
